Craftsman 15″ Floor Drill Press
November 18, 2006 – 3:30 pmCraftsman 15″ Floor Drill Press model 101.03662
After looking the owwm photo archives of all the different manufacturers’ drill presses I decided that the early ~1941 craftsman’s were what I wanted to have in my shop.
After looking for a while I found one for sale in the Craiglist of a town 2.5 hours north, where I happened to be driving to the following weekend for a conference. I am happy to say that I’ve never spent a better $80. It runs like a top with a little vibration, due either to the motor bearings or the chuck needing to be cleaned and tweaked. This is one heavy and well built machine. It is very complete, albeit greasy and dirty, but after 65 years what do you expect? I cleaned it off as well as I could before I took the shots below.

I just aquired a 15″ Craftsman just like yours. The spring steel retun spring is missing. Could you tell me how long the spring steel appears to be, and could you provide a photo with the inspection cover removed.
Thanks

My husband passed away in 2000 and left me an incredible assortment of tools. Among them was a bench mount Craftsman drill press. It looks quite old. The label says “Sears & Simpson Sears Ltd., model # 335-25986. It appears to be in good condition and someone said it could be valuable. I have no idea what it is worth. Does anyone out there know? I would appreciate any information I can get. Thanks

I have a 1960’s Craftsman Drill Press purchased at a yard sale that I am trying to locate the owner’s manual for. The manual is no longer available through Sears. Part number is 113.24511 and I have determined it was manufactured by Emerson Electric for Sears. My immediate need is to determine the spindle speeds for each of the four steps on the pully. Can anyone help?

We have an old benchtop drill press we are trying to find an approximate value for. It is a black and decker, model 1; has the numbers 33554 and 33553; 1/2″ 110v 2.9amp 375rpm. On the plate, it states Towson,MD. Any ideas???

Cheri,
Sorry, I don’t do appraisals. Best bet would be to put it on Craigslist and see what you get offers for.

Hello, I have an old Sears drill press that needs a new cord. My question is, when I put a new cord on with a grounded plug, do I just hook the ground wire up to the case of the motor wherever I can?
Thanks!

we have my father-in-laws old Craftsman drillpress and it needs (2) belts. How can we find out which belts it needs? sizes etc? Also would love to know the model number and year/era it was made. I can take a pic.

Dale,
I’m not sure, depends on the motor. I’d find a certified electrician to help out.

I just got my hands on a craftsman 101.03662 for 75 bucks on craigslist. Its is good working order and the quality is great. I love old machines like this and I thought overall it was a good deal.
I would say it doesn’t need any new parts, but could someone give me some ideas how to properly clean the unit. The gray paint is not in great shape. should I paint? Also, the column is a bit tarnished and the base is a little rusty. I guess I could sand blast the base, but I’m not sure how to clean up the column.
Thanks

Brian,
I can answer your questions 1-on-1 if you want to email me at (info (at) theoldmachine.com) - otherwise search the archives of the owwm.org site to find more info on ‘cleaning’ up a vintage drill press than you ever wanted to know.
