This saw is often thought of as being the best scroll saw ever designed, right up there with the Powermatic. My saw has the variable speed attachment which is nice. The motor is original Delta with the shaft cover and is a Double-Duty single phase. I’m looking for a No. 716 steel stand for this saw to go on.
Delta 40-440 VS 24″ Scroll Saw
12/19/2008
Unrestored

I think I have the same saw. I have no date but it is serial number
36 5522 can a date be established with this ID marking?
Mike,
Your saw was made in 1945. If you call Delta and give them the serial
number they will give you the month it was made also.
You can find more info the owwm.com site wiki:

Can you provide any insight to the construction of the spring-loaded head for an old cast 24″ scroll saw? It was old in appearance when I got it in 1970. I will check serial numbers tonight. The top of the square metal shaft had some sort of fastening mechanism brazed on- guessing something like a nut. It separated. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, richard
i have a scroll saw that looks just like that. im not sure how old it is but if that is a 1947 than the one i has must be around there. it is a boice crane.

I too have a MINT condition Delta/Rockwell 40-440 scroll saw. It is serial number DI-2262.
Could anyone find me a manufacturing date and/or manual for it?
Thanks much
i got a delta 44-440 scroll saw
i need to no what type of blade are used for this saw and what holds them on top plunger assy.i have two screws 1 on the rt is a thump screw / 1 on left is a machine screw thats it.the holder on bottom thump screw is in block facing front.is front or back right.i nreally would like to use the saw.thanks for any help!!!
The upper chuck has 2 small Jaws (am not sure if that is what you can call them but they are small steel blocks; the left hand block is held by a machine screw and the other one moves in by means of a thumb screw on the right.
Only finger tight pressure is required in the upper chuck and use pliers to apply moderate pressure on the lower chuck screw. This machine (40-440) will accept a wide variety of blades but most people use them for marquetry cutting and fret work. I like to use 2/0 skip tooth coz they are ideal for intricate work, also you can use #2.#3 and so on till #11. Also spiral blades such #2 to #6. They are all 5 inch long. You can also use the ones with pins but you have to knock out the pins or grind them with a dremel. Note: you can increase cutting range of machine by swiveling the lower chuck clockwise and turning the upper spring assembly cylinder to the next slot but you have to take out the thumb screw out to do that and then replace it.
My comment is actually a question, I have started to restore my 40-? and do not have the aid of either a serial number or model number plate. My machine has the manufactured plate on the right side of arm, shows that machine was made by the Delta company of Milwaukee, this machine has two four stack pulleys as speed control, the ac motor ( old but probably not original ) from the Ohio ac motor company and a segmented auxillary lamp. Can anyone help. Thanks Brad
JOE – I just checked and the blades I have are old and from
Parker Manufacturing Co. Worcester, Mass
Blank Ends .028 thick and .187 wide
No. 316
they do not have the pins on the top and bottom. they are completely flat. They are held in by the friction in the holder.
I have a delta 24″ scroll saw model 40-440. The upper and lower blade assemblies seem to be misaligned–Any tips on what to adjust or or how to go about lining them up. Are ther any manuals that step you through the procedure or do a restoration/adjustment sequence. Thanks for any suggestions.
Total beginner here… I just picked up a 40-440 at an auction and the upper blade assembly came in pieces. I have downloaded the original parts diagram but cant seem to make any sense of it. Can anyone provide more details/pictures to help me put this back together?
