Delta Milwaukee 17″ Drill Press
July 2, 2007 – 10:36 pmCirca Oct. 1945
Model 17-206
After searching for many months I was beginning to wonder when I’d find one that wasn’t either on the east coast or priced way above my budget. Finally one night this beautiful machine popped up on craigslist and I was able to get it for a fair price.
It came complete and in good condition with a 1hp RI motor, slo-speed gear reduction unit, and the foot lever attachment. I’m very happy with it. My poor Craftsman/Atlas is now dwarfed next to it’s much larger gray brother.

i have a drill press same as yours. im in process of restoring it to working condition. i wonder if you do have copy of a manual and parts list regarding to this type of drill press. i can provide you more information and pics if you like. thank you!

I too have a similar machine, surplus from Douglas Aircraft - parts list is on line here: http://www.mikestools.com/download/Delta-Parts-Lists/17-213-17-Inch-Drill-Press-Old-Style-with-DP-600-Z-Head-Casting-DP10.pdf
but I haven’t found an owners manual. And I want to know what the handle and gear assembly (#21-24 and 67-69 on the parts list) are for - My compound gear (# 111 on the callout) is stripped, so I need a replacement, or will have to make one - if you or anyone else needs (or has) them, let me know. It is a 2 part gear, so replacing only the cast iron part (wiht bronze) seems practical.

I found the parts I needed - I ended up with three of the table mounted version of these drill presses, used parts from one - it’s interesting the subtle variations between the Delta and the Delta/Rockwell - so now I have two complete units to dispose of and plenty of parts - I’m near Los Angeles, so if anyone needs anything , please go to my web site, http://www.wbnoble.com, find my email, and contact me with your needs. I can offer a whole drill press, working for $50 if you come and pick it up (I did remove the motor to make it easier to handle) - these all have 3 phase 220/440 motors, and I have both the #2 morse tape quill and the #33 jacobs taper quill

Jim, try Delta first, if that fails then Ebay or the OWWM sale forum.

I have one very similar but I believe it pre-dates this one. The belt cover is a cast piece that only covers the front pully. I’ve restored it but it makes a knocking sound when pressure is applied out of alignment with the axis of rotation. I know this is not designed to be used with sanding drums and wire wheels, but it is very convenient for that use. I believe the noise is coming from the sliding spline gear due to play in the lower bearing. Any comments?

George,
Best thing is to take it apart and see what is going on. I haven’t had mine apart yet so wouldn’t be able to help you too much. A post over at owwm.org will get you more answers especially if you have pics of the suspected parts.

Loni,
I don’t do appraisals. Machine value is as varied as anyone’s opinion. What’s it worth to you? Where are you located? Location will dictate the price you can set as well.

Tom, if you check out owwm.com and look in the publications section you can probably find a parts breakdown of that dp. That’ll help and if you still have questions then check out owwm.org - try the search feature to look for info on the subject.

Josh:
I just acquired a beautiful Delta 17″ drill press and just finished wiring it this last week. for 120 volt single phase your wiring is as follows… red and green connected-
black and yellow connected, line power in will be white to red and green and black to black and yellow. I hope this makes sense to you, please be careful to properly install the switch; a single pole. use a continuity tester before powering up to make sure you are switched ok.
Yes, I’m here in Milwaukee probably accounts for the good condition of my drill press; nice to be near the source!!
Good luck, Josh. Sincerely, Christopher
